Broadway San Jose Presents – Wicked

Oh, what a night it was!  The opening week of Wicked presented by Broadway San Jose was certainly something to be talked about. The energy, the anticipation, we all couldn’t wait for the curtains to rise! The first time I ever saw this show was 10 years ago in New York City, so with that being said, it’s almost felt like I was watching it for the first time after having waited this long to catch it again, and this time in my home town of San Jose.

For those of you stunners not familiar with the Wicked storyline, I’ll make it short and sweet. It’s about friendship, overcoming your fears, believing in yourself, mixed in with a little love, and of course Oz!

The main characters are and Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West (played by Mariand Torres) and Glinda, The Good Witch (played by Erin Mackey) are two completely opposite ladies.  Elphaba, grew up shut out by her family and society because of her peculiar green skin while Glinda was beautiful, cheerful and of course popular. The two women met at Shiz University but certainly despised each other and were eventually paired together (unwillingly) by Head Mistress, Madame Morrible (played by Sharon Sachs). Disagreements and mockery were almost a daily ritual between Elphaba and Glinda but things eventually take a turn…for the better.

Fast forward, the two friends head to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, their friendship and lives went in opposite directions based on a situation with the Wizard of Oz (played by Jason Graae) and Fiyero (played by Curt Hansen).

Each musical performance by Mackey and Torres were just absolutely moving, especially “Defying Gravity” and “For Good” witch were an absolute hit with the crowd.

I now understand why many people see the show multiple times…the music, the storyline…it’s really THAT GOOD!

I highly recommend that you catch the show whether it’s your first time or want to see it again with friends or family before it leaves the San Jose Center for Performing Arts as the show runs through September 8, 2019.
