Broadway San Jose presented their third installment of what will be a great season with none other than the popular, West Side Story. Opening night was Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts. The show brought an audience of all ages along with a completely full auditorium.
West Side Story has been on broadway, catching the attention of live music goers since 1957. The opening scene alone started off with excitement, as The Jets fight to claim their turf against The Sharks. The real premiss of the story is: two gangs, different race, wanting respect and of course love. The singing was exhilarating, the dancing was a sight to see and of course, there is always love that makes a story even more interesting.
The love that come from two rivals, Tony & Maria were captivating, a modern day similarity to the famous Romeo & Juliet. The two cast members who played Tony (played by Ross Lekites) and Maria (played by Evy Ortiz) portrayed so well that the most opposite of people are the ones that find true love and for the most part, love at first sight. They share the struggle of trying to be individuals outside of their rival friends and family, but that is also getting in the way of being together. The song ” One Hand, One Heart” moved me because you can almost feel their love for one another.
This broadway classic celebrated it’s 500th performance on Wednesday, January 18, 2011. The talented cast and the amazing team at Broadway San Jose showed their support with something sweet for everyone.
The popular broadway of love, rivalry and struggle will continue it’s run at the San Jose Center for Performing arts until January 22, 2011. For more information on upcoming shows and how to purchase tickets, please visit Broadway San Jose at www.broadwaysanjose.com
