La Foret – A Legendary Restaurant in San Jose

If you’re a native of San Jose, California, particularly the Almaden Valley, then the name La Foret will certainly ring a bell.  This restaurant stands as an iconic place where many locals enjoy French Cuisine and fine dining all the way.

If you’re not familiar with this restaurant, let me give you a brief history of this magnificent place. The building itself is historic being San Jose’s very first two-story hotel, housing hard working crews that wanted to get into the area’s growing “quicksilver” mines, dating back to 1848.  In the 1930’s the hotel was converted into a local cafe called, Cafe Del Rio which served in operation for the next 40 years.  Fast forward to the 1970’s, business partners John Davoudi and Mike Mashayekh reopened the building to the iconic restaurant we know today as La Foret. For nearly 39 years, owner and chef John Davoudi announced his retirement and that’s where local restauranteurs Maurizio and Giuseppe Carrubba stepped in and decided to carry on the classic traditional cuisine with their own intimate spin.

While keeping the tradition, the new owners are adding their “farm to table” concept to their newly (interior) renovated establishment. I had the opportunity to taste some of the menu’s favorites and wanted to share them with you.

I decided to start off with glass of Riesling…

1st Course – Sea Scallops

Seared day boat scallops served in a light saffron herb cream accompanied with a puff pastry. A very delicious 1st course which had my taste buds going!

2nd Course – Tortellini La Foret

Sautéed porcini mushrooms, aged garlic and cream. If you’re fan of mushrooms and wanted a vegetarian option, this dish is definitely one to go with.

3rd Course – Tournedos of Beef Chanterelle

Tenderloin medallions, golden chanterelle, ginger brandy and accompanied with a side of fresh vegetables and garlic whipped potatoes.  This dish was my absolute favorite of the night.  The beef was cooked to perfection and melted with every bite.

Final Course – Dessert

The legendary Soufflé Grand Marnier

While the food was certainly exquisite, the grounds itself are one to be impressed by as well.  Nestled alongside a creek, the restaurant is the perfect place to host private events, especially upstairs in their dining room which can accommodate up to 30 guests or out on their patio for ceremonies, weddings and other special occasions.
